How to Share Files Between Your Computer and Smartphone

Sharing files is no longer between your phone's and computer,  friends with a smartphone might want some videos you took from your iPhone or you may want to copy a bunch of pictures from a Windows PC to your iPad.

I will be talking about some ways to share file across your devices in a simple way, i will try as much as i can to break it down, in every way to your understanding, on how to share files between computers and between your smartphones.

Sharing Files Between Computers

When it comes to sharing files between computer's, we can say they're two ways, you can share file between computer via Local Network or Remote Sharing.  If you need to copy some files to another computer on your local network, it will be much faster because you’ll either be using Ethernet or Wi-Fi to perform the transfer.

This is the best way to transfer a large amount of data to another computer quickly. When copying files outside of your LAN (local area network), you are limited by your Internet speed. If you have Verizon FIOS with a 75 Mbps upload/download connection, then transferring large amounts of data to a remote computer will also be fast.

However, if you’re stuck with Nigeria Mobile network Operator's which data speed can be frustrating. it’ll take a long time to upload a few gigabytes of data. Let’s first talk about local data transfers.

Local Files Transfers

Microsoft has finally made things easier with the introduction of homegroups in Windows 7. it is an easy way to share files between computers connected to the same Network running on window 7,8,10. Note is not supported to windows running below window 7

To get started, first read my post on how to setup up a Homegroup in Windows 7. Note that the procedure is exactly the same in Windows 8 and Windows 10.

Sharing Files between windows and Mac

Sharing files between window to window pcs, is the simplest way everything thinks but now lets talk about sharing files between windows and mac

I will say is really easy to share files between these different OS. The both OS  have been supporting each other’s operating systems over the last several years. This means it’s now very simple for a Mac to access a Windows shared folder and vice versa.  In my next article, i will explain more on how to set it up. but use the image below for easy setup

How to share a file using Remote Data Transfers

All of that above mentioned are local data transfers. Now let’s move on to remote data transfers. Suppose you have a friend or family member you want to transfer data to that live far from you, making it hard for you to share a file to him via Lan.

Over the years now they have been an improvement in technology making it very easy for us to keep in contact with family and friends worldwide, now we can share our files from our computer to our friends and family living far using Cloud Service

Cloud Services

If you have a fast connection, especially a fast upload speed, then I recommend you use a cloud storage service. Simply install Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, Amazon CloudDrive, Google Drive, iCloud Drive, etc., upload your data and then download it on the remote machine.

This works well for most people, but there are some condition, like you need a fast internet connection and have to purchase space on these cloud storage services, which means they don’t make sense for someone who just wants to do a one-time transfer of 500GB of data. also, you have to trust your data with a third-party company like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, etc. The data you are transferring could be sensitive and you may not want to risk putting it on third-party servers.
